Infectious mononucleosis

January 13, 2026
Topic

A disease caused by a virus that spreads through saliva.

Viruses that cause infectious mononucleosis, also called mono, can spread through kissing. They also can spread by sharing a glass or food utensils with an infected person.

Mono symptoms can include extreme tiredness, sore throat, fever, swollen lymph nodes in the neck and armpits, swollen tonsils, and rash. Teens and young adults are most likely to get mono with all of the symptoms.

Mono treatment involves resting, eating healthy and drinking fluids. Pain relievers can ease a fever or sore throat. If an infection caused by bacteria happens along with mono, antibiotics may be needed to treat the bacterial infection.
