Germs called bacteria can cause prostatitis. The germs may have spread from other parts of the urinary or reproductive system. Young and middle-aged adults have a higher risk of prostatitis.

Prostatitis symptoms can include urination that is painful, burning or frequent. The urine may look cloudy or red. A person also may have pain in the stomach area, groin, lower back, penis or testicles.

Prostatitis treatment can include medicines to kill germs, relieve urination symptoms and ease pain. Therapy with a mental healthcare professional can help manage stress, depression or anxiety linked with pain.
