5 Causes of vomiting

Vomiting is medically described as a reflex which aims to allow the body to get rid of the gastric contents. Vomiting usually occurs due to the following causes:
1.    Microbial infection, which could be viral (as in gastroenteritis) or bacterial (as in food poisoning).
2.    There are many health problems which could be manifested with vomiting, such as; vertigo, migraine, peptic ulcer… etc.
3.    Vomiting may develop when the patient experiences severe pain as in pain related to renal colic or acute cholecystitis.
4.    First trimester of pregnancy is mainly manifested with vomiting and motion sickness due to increased levels of estrogen and progesterone hormones.
5.    Administration of certain medications (such as chemotherapy) could be responsible for vomiting.
Although most cases of vomiting tend to be harmless, it's advised to seek medical care if vomiting lasts more than 48 hours or accompanied with one of the following symptoms:
•    High grade fever.
•    Hematemesis.
•    Dark black stool or bloody stool.
•    Dehydration.
•    Muscle cramps.
•    Neck stiffness.
•    Oliguria or dark urine.
•    Disturbed consciousness.
Proper management of vomiting depends mainly on treatment of the cause, administration of antiemetic drugs as well as correction of dehydration by oral and IV fluids.
