Beware of Glaucoma

Glaucoma

What is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a condition caused by an increase in the eye's internal pressure, which causes damage to the optic nerve, and the case may deteriorate to the point of blindness.
Any person of any age can develop Glaucoma, but it is more common in the elderly.
It is worth mentioning that the patient may not notice symptoms until the condition is severe, so regular eye examination is necessary to avoid vision loss.

Glaucoma symptoms:

  1. The patient will feel pain in the eye.
  2. The patient will suffer from headaches.
  3. The patient will feel nauseous and may vomit.
  4. The patient will suffer from redness in the eye.
  5.  The patient will suffer from blurred vision.
  6. The patient will see halos around the light.
  7. You may also suffer from blind spots in the central or peripheral vision.

Risk Factors leading to Glaucoma:

  1. The family's medical history because if one of your family members develops glaucoma, there is a risk you'll develop it too.
  2. High internal eye pressure, as mentioned earlier.
  3. The use of corticosteroids for long periods, especially eye drops.
  4. Race, since people of Latin or African descent are most likely to develop Glaucoma.
  5. Thin cornea at the center can increase the risk of developing Glaucoma.
  6. Suffering from other diseases such as high blood pressure, sickle cell anemia, heart disease, and diabetes.
  7.  Ageing, people over 60 are more likely to develop glaucoma.
  8. Undergoing previous eye operations or an eye injury increases your risk of Glaucoma.
  9. Nearsightedness or farsightedness increases the risk of developing Glaucoma.

A regular eye examination will help you detect your Glaucoma early, thereby receiving appropriate treatment and avoiding dangerous complications.
