Winter and Toothache

Winter and Toothache

Some people don't know the effect of winter and the cold weather on teeth.

In this article, we will discuss how winter can affect teeth and how to avoid any disturbing symptoms.

What is the effect of winter on teeth?

1- Dentists found that the cold weather of winter makes teeth contract, unlike the warm weather that makes the teeth expand. During winter the cold weather causes a contraction of the enamel layers (the layers that protect teeth) and the appearance of some thin cracks in them, which weakens the teeth and makes them vulnerable and sensitive, and prone to toothache.

It is also worth mentioning that the cold weather has the same effect on teeth as consuming iced foods and drinks.

2- A person can feel toothache during the winter if the person has receding gum, which exposes the person to suffer from teeth sensitivities or inflammation and bacterial infection.

3- Grinding teeth can cause erosion of the protective layer of teeth enamel, thus exposing the teeth to weakness, sensitivity, and pain during the winter.

4- Brushing with force or using a hard toothbrush leads to the erosion of the enamel layer of the teeth and thus suffering from teeth sensitivity and toothache during winter.

5- As Vitamin D is essential for healthy teeth, Vitamin D deficiency can cause toothache, which occurs especially during winter due to lack of sun exposure, which leads to weakening the teeth and exposing the person to toothache.

How to avoid feeling tooth pain during winter?

  1. Breathe through the nose and not through the mouth to avoid exposing the teeth to the cold air of winter and avoid toothache.
  2. Change the toothbrush every two to three months and choose a soft brush to avoid enamel erosion and teeth sensitivity and toothache.
  3. Avoid or reduce the intake of acidic drinks because they lead to enamel erosion and pain.
  4. Use a mouthwash containing fluoride.
  5. Use a type of toothpaste specialized in relieving symptoms of teeth sensitivity and toothache as well.
  6. Get rid of the food accumulated between the teeth using dental floss at least once a day.
  7. Visit the dentist regularly to check dental health and get early treatment for any issue to avoid toothache.
